The idea of the pure, sexually untouched woman has permeated religions, cultures, and continents for thousands of years. The concept of virginity lies at the root of many patriarchal mechanisms of oppression that shape the lives of women worldwide. The demonization of female sexuality is as widespread as the booming industry surrounding virginity. Deeply rooted notions of purity are also omnipresent in pop culture, while political decisions in many places increasingly enforce control over female sexuality. This ongoing series explores rituals, customs, and religious practices related to virginity in contemporary contexts. The photographs already produced were taken in Afghanistan, Albania, Germany, Italy, Nepal, Syria, and Austria.
