When darkness falls on Chermalyk the shooting starts. Grenades and rockets regularly hit the village on the Kalmius river, on what in 2014 became the border of Ukraine and the newly declared Donetsk People’s Republic. The war between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian separatists has largely been forgotten, as have the people of Chermalyk. Most of them belong to a Greek community that has no other place to go, no money to flee. So they hold out in their village among soldiers that use their houses to hide and to shoot, with no regard for collateral damage.
