Furies, Watching From Above is a documentary book project by photographer Johanna Maria Fritz and journalist Morgane Bona, who have reported from Ukraine since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion.

In 2022, the conflict appeared as modern-day David versus Goliath. Ukrainian soldiers, with far less resources, relied on commercially available civilian drones as improvised tools to repel Russian forces around Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Kherson. Russia quickly responded by developing and massively expanding its own drone capabilities. Bomber drones, FPV systems, and loitering munitions soon became central to military operations on both sides, growing increasingly accurate, destructive, and deeply integrated into everyday warfare.

Today, drones dominate a zone stretching roughly fifty kilometres from the front line. They watch constantly and can strike anyone at any moment. What once appeared to be small, almost fragile flying devices has become an invisible and unpredictable threat that shapes every aspect of life near the front.

The publication explores how drones have transformed warfare and everyday life for soldiers and civilians alike, bringing the reader from the workshop where drones are made to the frontline where they fly. Combining documentary photography, reporting, personal testimonies, paintings and essays, the project examines the technological, ethical, religious, ecological, historical and legal implications of remote warfare.

The book includes the work of Ukrainian painter Dmytro Moldovanov, who continues to create from his village under constant drone surveillance, and Ukrainian photographer George Ivanchenko, who survived a Russian drone attack in Donetsk region. The publication is edited by Ukrainian curator and editor Kateryna Radchenko, whose expertise in contemporary Ukrainian photography and visual culture provides an essential editorial perspective throughout the project.

The publication will be released in English and Ukrainian.
