The conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh
The 2020 war over Nagorno Karabakh in the South Caucasus lasted only six weeks but cost the lives of more than 6000 people. During the battles Azerbaijani forces re-conquered large parts of the exclave which they had lost in an earlier war in the 1990s. Their air superiority – most notably: modern drones from Turkey and Israel – proved to be decisive. After the Russians had brokered an armistice agreement their peacekeepers moved in and Armenians had to vacate their homes, often burning down the very houses they had built in the previous decades. During a visit before the handover these territories seemed like a fog-engulfed world in between. 2020
